Transforming UHN Research through Equity, Excellence, and Social Justice

Project Chrysalis aims to transform UHN research by integrating social justice, research excellence, and local change.

Introduction to Project Chrysalis

Project Chrysalis is a research education initiative that emerged from the Princess Margaret community. It aims to collectively advance equity and justice within the research ecosystem and enable excellence in all we do, locally to globally. Through a comprehensive, evidence-based learning program, Project Chrysalis empowers individuals at every level of the research community to integrate excellence and equity into their daily practices. Through consultation, co-design, and continuous reflection, Project Chrysalis equips participants with the tools and knowledge to take concrete action and transform research methodologies, processes, leadership, and culture to foster inclusion, innovation and best possible outcomes.

Project Chrysalis offers participants three main program components:

  • An originally developed 6-module, 8-week course that educates learners on health equity, social justice-oriented research, and change leadership principles and practices
  • Personalized coaching and support to complete a local change project that advances research excellence and equity in a concrete way
  • Invitation to join a UHN Research Institute-wide community of practice, to continue learning and collaborating with colleagues in equity-focused ways

Through Project Chrysalis, participants will

Complete a change project

that makes a real difference to their work

Understand and apply key concepts

to ensure change is sustainable and achieves excellence and equity

Receive a UHN certificate of completion

that counts towards UHN professional development and learning hours

Join a community of practice

that connects them to change agents that improves the work and lives of UHN Research team members, patients, and participants.

Project Chrysalis is powered by The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Community Engagement

  • Project Chrysalis is open to all UHN researchers, support staff and select community partners, creating an inclusive learning environment where every voice is valued. We welcome participation from a diverse range of individuals, including patient and family partners, research staff, clinicians, administrators, project coordinators, and other staff. By engaging participants at all levels of the network, we aim to foster collaboration and co-creation, ensuring that IDEA principles are integrated throughout the research process. This inclusive approach is essential for driving lasting, systemic change and advancing equity in research practices at UHN. Together, we can reshape the future of research to be more inclusive, equitable, and innovative.

Open to all UHN researchers, support staff and select community partners, we welcome a diverse set of voices to help create lasting change.
